Diagnosed with ADHD in Adulthood

I knew that there was something missing.

Just thinking about how ADHD has impacted things I like to do; I think it makes it difficult in planning things, and time management, so I might enjoy my hobbies so much that I exclusively miss out on things that really are important. I was diagnosed with ADHD when I went to seek help. I had family issues, family with struggles, so I went to go see if there was something that was going on. Maybe there's something wrong with me. So they did evaluations, and then the doctor did a prescription of medications.

I knew that there was something missing.   My background, or my thoughts on it is it's not just medication that would fix everything, but I needed something else. So I knew that the formula was going to be meds plus some sort of therapy, some sort of coach, or something in my life that would help focus that. I think it was hard to define how ADHD was impacting me, I think because I was so busy, and I was not able to look up and see what's going on around me. There would be more stress with each kind of planning project. It's like more stress, because I knew what it entailed, and I just didn't want to do it anymore.

When I look back over my life, and kind of revisit my life, I think there's different touchpoints when I see it early on, and for me to go and get diagnosed with ADHD was kind of a big step. My mom used to make fun of me and say that I was “Mr. Uninformed”, and I think that there is different parts of my life I see that. So no, I think I was just kind of living with these symptoms and not knowing that there was better strategies. During my last move, I needed to switch providers, and so when I affiliated with a provider, it was almost a year, I think, and then that was the time that I realized I had to do something besides just medication, and I think probably things at home were the motivation.

I would recommend going through the evaluation at Progressive Therapy Associates, and just finding out if it's going to be beneficial and be surprised. The work that it takes to implement the strategies isn't easy. Everything in me cries out, do the thing that I want to do, which winds up being late for work, but when I work with one of the therapists, they're encouraging me to see my strategy. Is it done well? Where could we work on, and what can we do next time? The encouragement was really good. Their encouragement helped me stay the course and finding out what strategies were going to be helpful.

We see individuals with ADHD, traumatic brain injury, and concussion as well as stroke.

When people think about speech language pathology, they typically think about speech disorders or language challenges, which speech therapists can do, but here, we've just chosen to focus more on the cognitive aspect and when I say that, I mean things to do with focus and memory, speed of processing, planning, problem solving, organization, all those daily skills that help you to really function and organize your life.

If you're someone who's struggling with attention or memory or planning for instance, for a variety of reasons, you can self-refer. You can pick up the phone and call us at 701-356-7766. You can find us on our website and submit your information and come for a free consultation or your primary care doctor can also refer you for treatment at Progressive Therapy Associates.
